2010 DND Activity Report

Posted on: December 13, 2011

Welcome to the Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders’ 2010 Annual Activity Report.  I invite you to read about the exciting activities throughout 2010.

I am pleased to report that during 2010, the Division’s total active grant funding held by our researchers was $8,317,723. Some of the major national grant funding obtained in 2010 included new awards from; Canadian Institutesfor Health Reseach (Glazner, Anderson), Canadian Foundation for Innovation (Fernyhough), Juvenile DiabetesResearch Foundation (USA) (Fernyhough), National Sciences & Engineering Council (Anderson), and NationalHeart & Stroke Foundation (Anderson, Albensi).

Drs. Chris Anderson and Paul Fernyhough received tenure appointments with the University of Manitoba.Drs. Chris Anderson and Ben Albensi were promoted to Associate Professors within the Department of Pharmacology& Therapeutics.

Through our DND Visiting Speaker Program, we were able to bring three outstanding scientists to Winnipeg to give research presentations to the local neuroscience community; Dr. Brian Christie – University of Victoria; Dr.Douglas Wright, University of Kansas; Dr. Peter Oates, Oates Biomedical Consulting, Conneticutt, USA (formerlyhead of diabetic complciations at Pfizer). In addition to this program, DND participated in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics Weekly Seminar Program (over 30 research talks were held in 2010). These talks are video-conferenced to the St. Boniface campus so that DND staff can enjoy the talks without leaving the campus.DND was actively involved in the Manitoba Neuroscience Network monthly seminars (led by Dr. Chris Anderson).

DND investigators gave over 150 contact hours of teaching to University of Manitoba students. DND implementeda program for ‘video-linking teaching lectures’ that allowed broad-casting the teaching over an IP networkconnection between campuses (Fort Garry/Bannatyne/St. Boniface) to save student travel time. Dr. Chris Anderson and Kelly Jorundson worked together with IT staff at all campuses and we now successfully do this for most lecturestaught by DND investigators. We were the first unit at the University of Manitoba to implement this system.

In June 2010, The Manitoba Neuroscience Network held its Inaugural Scientific Meeting organized byDND scientist Dr. Chris Anderson. Dr. Anderson established the Manitoba Neuroscience Network (promotedthru the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience) as an effort to encourage communication, cooperationand collaboration among Manitoba’s broad basic science and clinical neuroscience research community.The Inaugural Manitoba Neuroscience Network meeting in June 2010 was a tremendous success, attracting over160 attendees.

We are pleased to build on this success and will be planning a second annual meeting in 2011. We are pleased to announce that recruitment is currently underway for another principal investigator and weare hopeful to have someone in place early 2012. In spite of difficult finding times with cut backs at CIHR the DND group continues to prosper and with hopesof further expansion in the future.

Respectfully Submitted,

Paul Fernyhough, Ph.D.Director – Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre;
Professor – Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, University of Manitoba
