First there was the St. Boniface General Hospital, then there was the St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation, and then came the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre - which has evolved into a research campus that includes the Sakharov MRI Centre and the I.H. Asper Clinical Research Institute.

Together they create and maintain a tradition of excellence in medical care, education, and research.

The St. Boniface General Hospital is Western Canada's first hospital. It was founded in 1871 by the Grey Nuns, a religious congregation inspired by Mother Marguerite D'Youville. The Mission, Aims and Objectives of the Hospital were then, as they are now:

  • To provide the highest quality of care to its patients and of service to its community
  • To participate in the education of personnel
  • To promote research for the improvement of patient care

The St. Boniface Hospital & Research Foundation was established in 1971 as part of the centennial celebrations of the Hospital. The Foundation acts as the primary fundraising body for the St. Boniface General Hospital Inc., and promotes excellence in health care research related to the prevention and treatment of disease, the promotion of good health, and improvements in patient care. All with the overriding objective of improving individual quality of life and respecting the individual.

The St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre is a result of the emphasis that both the Hospital and Foundation place on medical research.
