Founded as the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences in 1987 by world-renowned cardiac reseacher Dr. Naranjan Dhalla, the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences is currently comprised of 17 laboratories, each investigating unique aspects of cardiovascular disease ranging from cell biology to advanced cardiac imaging techniques. This multidisciplinary research program has been utilized in the training of hundreds of graduate students and many post-doctoral fellows.
The ICS is widely considered one of the premiere cardiovascular research teams in North America, and continues its efforts to promote cardiovascular education at the local, national and international levels. For example:
- All members are involved in teaching cardiovascular physiology to medical and graduate students
- The National Research Forum for Young Investigators in Circulatory and Respiratory Health is organized by the members of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in Winnipeg and the 2½ day scientific program is attended by 450 young scientists annually.
- ICS members are engaged in organizing cardiovascular symposia at different places for the purpose of promoting scientific basis of cardiology in the world.
- The International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences, which is based in the Institute, has continued publishing a highly successful bulletin, CV Network, for fostering the exchange of ideas in the field of cardiovascular education and research.
- The members of the Institute continued to be part of the TACTICS program based at the University of Toronto and IMPACT program based at the University of British Columbia. These CIHR-supported training programs have indeed strengthened research activities at the Institute.
