Singal receives International Prize

Pawan K. Singal, PhD, DSc, Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICS) at St. Boniface Hospital, and Professor of Physiology, University of Manitoba, recently received the International Prize of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.  The award was presented at the Mirror Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava, Slovak Republic on September 9, 2009.

Among other dignitaries, the ceremony was also attended by Mr. Georges Lemieux, Charge d’ Affaires, Canadian Embassy.  In introducing the awardee, Prof. Daniela Jezova, Vice President of the Slovak Academy said “Dr. Singal has not only made some outstanding contributions in the field of heart research, but he is also a man with a great heart, and has promoted collaborations in heart research in Slovakia”.

Dr. Singal is a founding member of the ICS, which began as the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences in 1987.  He is recognized as a world leader in the field of cell pathophysiology, where his pioneering studies have led the way in understanding the potential of various antioxidants in the prevention or treatment of damage associated with free radical induced oxidative stress.  With this award the SAS further acknowledges Dr. Singal’s outstanding work in the field of natural sciences.

The Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) is the main scientific and research institution in Slovakia fostering basic and strategic basic research.  Its primary mission is to acquire new knowledge of nature, society and technology, specifically targeted at ensuring scientific basis for the advancement in Slovakia.  The SAS consists of 69 scientific organizations and publishes 57 scientific and professional journals.  More than 40 scientific and scholarly societies, which associate scientists and scholars from various disciplines, are affiliated with SAS.

Dr. Singal has published more than 250 papers and 25 books and has given over 200 talks all around the world. A community leader, Dr. Singal has been recognized more than 40 times with honors and awards by the local, national and international organizations/agencies, including the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Heart Award for outstanding contributions as a Heart Research Builder in Manitoba.
