Dr. Ben Albensi, Principal Investigator, Synaptic Plasticity and Cellular Memory Dysfunction, Division of Neurodegenerative Disorders and associate professor, Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Manitoba, has been invited to give a presentation at West Point Military Academy on July 26-27, 2012.

Dr. Albensi’s presentation is entitled Models of Brain Injury: Applications for Studies in Synaptic Plasticity and Memory Dysfunction. His work focuses on memory impairment following head trauma – which may lead to chronic disease such as Alzheimers – and the identification of pharmacological mechanisms in the brain that could be targeted with promising therapeutics.

The United States Military Academy (West Point) has been educating, training, and inspiring leaders of character for the United States Army for more than 200 years. The academy is an internationally recognized institution for academic, military and physical excellence.

The purpose of the meeting was to provide a set of recommendations to the army for soldier wellness and cognitive performance. For example:

  1. When does a solider return to duty after head trauma – if at all?
  2. How is memory assessed before and after head trauma?
  3. How do we measure baseline cognitive performance in the new recruit?
  4. How do we distinguish novice brain from expert brain?
