At the recent 4th Cuba-Canada International Heart Symposium in Holguin, Cuba, there were 25 posters presented by undergraduate students, graduate students, technicians, postdoctoral fellows, residents, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and research associates from institutions across Cuba and Canada. Six winners were declared at the meeting after deliberations from a panel of international judges representing four countries. The winners were awarded prize money totaling $1000. The winners and their ranking at the meeting was as follows:
1st Prize: Andrea Edel, (graduate student), Winnipeg
2nd Prize: Dr. Eric de la Peña, (Cardiac Surgeon), Cuba
3rd Prize: Dr. Maikel Santos, (Cardiologist) Cuba
4th Prize: Dr Marketa Hlavakova, (Postdoctoral Fellow), Winnipeg
5th Prize: Dr. Alden Quesada, (Cardiology Resident), Cuba
6th Prize: Andrea Edel, (graduate student), Winnipeg
The province of Holguin, Cuba hosted the 4th Cuba-Canada International Symposium on the Heart from January 24 to 28, with the participation of more than one hundred renowned Cuban and foreign scientists. The event, held at Hotel Playa Pesquero, is considered among the most important meetings in Cuba in 2013, in the specialties of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery and Research. The Symposium was organized by the V. I. Lenin hospital in Holguin, the provincial Health Department (Cuba), St-Boniface Hospital Research, and the Cuban Society of Cardiology.
