Dr. Jon Gerrard visited the Youth BioLab this afternoon. He met with students, program leader Steve Jones, as well as St-Boniface Hospital executive director of research Dr. Grant Pierce.
The students represented the following schools: Argyle Alternative High School, Children of the Earth, College Churchill, Churchill DMCI, Elmwood, Gordon Bell, Grant Park, Kelvin, Sisler, St. John’s and Tec Voc.
Dr. Gerrard, MLA for River Heights, is an internationally recognized researcher and physician with a publication history exploring medicine, science and the environment. From 1985 – 1992, Gerrard led a multidisciplinary team in the care and treatment of Manitoba children with cancer as head of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg.
The RBC Youth BIOlab Jeunesse teaching laboratory was built with support from Manitoba Education, RBC, and the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation and opened its doors to students in Spring 2013. The program is delivered in partnership with Manitoba school divisions and with the support of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to connect St-Boniface Hospital and Research Centre to classroom learning.
