In an era where healthcare and research are constantly evolving, the importance of patient engagement in shaping the future of medical trials cannot be overstated. It’s this critical aspect of healthcare that the As PER usual podcast explores, taking listeners on an insightful journey into the world of Canadian patient engagement in research.
“As PER usual” is a podcast that aims to help make patient engagement in research that standard, or “as PER usual,” by exploring the current state of patient engagement in Canadian research and ways to improve it. This engaging podcast was created in the winter of 2022 following a collaborative study led by Drs. Anna Chudyk and Annette Schultz, academic health researchers here at the Asper Clinical Research Institute, and Roger Stoddard, a patient partner. This study brought together academic researchers and patient partners, all funded through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR).
The primary goal of this collaborative study was to provide a platform for both researchers and patients to voice their perspectives on patient engagement in health research in Canada. Over the course of four virtual meetings, they worked with 30 participants to identify ten areas where health research in Canada could improve its approach to patient engagement.
Anna Chudyk and Bryn Robinson, another researcher from Atlantic Canada, are the passionate hosts of the podcast. Although Roger Stoddard, a longtime patient partner and advocate for this project, passed away in December 2022, his legacy and contributions to the field continue to resonate through each episode of As PER usual.
The podcast offers a unique and engaging format, similar to a live discussion section of a journal article. Each episode begins with Anna and Bryn discussing one of the themes identified in their study. Listeners are then treated to insights from researchers and patients who have first-hand experience with these issues in the field of patient engagement.
In the third act of each episode, the hosts engage in discussion with their guests, often uncovering practical ways to initiate positive change in the healthcare and research landscape. The goal is not only to highlight the challenges, but also to provide actionable solutions that can be implemented immediately. So, whether you’re a healthcare professional, a patient, or simply someone interested in the evolving landscape of healthcare research, As PER usual promises to be an enlightening and inspiring journey.
