Research by Dr. Miyoung Suh, a Principal Investigator in the Nutrition and Neurological Diseases lab with the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine and the Division of Neurodegenerative and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, was recently featured in the Winnipeg Free Press and the UM News.

Dr. Suh, also a professor in the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba (UM), was highlighted for her involvement in an initiative addressing food insecurity in Manitoba’s remote northern communities.

The article details how a team from the University of Manitoba, in collaboration with the Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN), is implementing Smart Vertical Farming (SMART-VF). This innovative system uses computer-monitored lighting and climate control to grow fresh produce year-round, aiming to reduce reliance on costly imports and ensure a steady supply of nutritious food. By growing value-added functional vegetables, the project seeks to combat the long-standing challenges of food insecurity in these areas, ultimately improving access to fresh vegetables and promoting better health outcomes within the community.
