St. Boniface Hospital Foundation honours leadership in translational research
Dr. Amir Ravandi, Principal Investigator, Cardiovascular Lipidomics, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, is the 2025 recipient of the Duhamel Innovation Award, presented by the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation. The annual award, named in honour of the late Senator and former Member of Parliament Ronald Duhamel, recognizes outstanding leadership and innovation in advancing health care and research at St. Boniface Hospital. The award includes a $6,500 cash honorarium.
Dr. Ravandi is a clinician scientist with the University of Manitoba and an interventional cardiologist at St. Boniface Hospital, where he also serves as Research Director for the Section of Cardiology. His research focuses on the role of lipids in heart disease, using cutting-edge omics technologies to identify and understand the molecular underpinnings of cardiovascular conditions.
As the lead of the Cardiovascular Lipidomics Facility at St. Boniface Hospital—the largest of its kind in Canada—Dr. Ravandi and his team use high-throughput LC-MS/MS analysis to identify lipid biomarkers linked to myocardial reperfusion injury, aortic valve stenosis, and cardiogenic shock. His work is helping to chart new territory in personalized and precision cardiology.
In addition to his research, Dr. Ravandi performs over 700 invasive cardiac procedures annually, including many complex and high-risk interventions. His ability to merge clinical expertise with lipidomics-based discovery exemplifies the kind of translational research that the Duhamel Innovation Award seeks to honour.
Congratulations to Dr. Ravandi for this well-deserved recognition!
