A new graduate student award has been established to honour one of Canada’s most distinguished scientists. The Dr. Grant Pierce Diabetes Research Prize is now open for applications from graduate students completing their degrees at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre. This annual award, valued at $1,000 and accompanied by a commemorative plaque, will recognize the exceptional academic and research accomplishments of students earning either a Master’s or Ph.D. from an accredited Manitoba-based university.
Funded through a generous contribution from the Diabetes Research and Treatment Centre Winnipeg Inc. (DRTC) Endowment Fund and administered by the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, the Prize gives preference to students whose work has focused on diabetes and related health issues. In addition to highlighting outstanding research, this new award celebrates the profound impact Dr. Grant N. Pierce has had as a scientist, educator, and leader in health research across Manitoba, Canada, and the world.
A Career of Impact
Dr. Grant Pierce has long been recognized as a towering figure in cardiovascular and metabolic research. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has conducted groundbreaking work on heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and diabetes. His pioneering research into the therapeutic potential of nutraceuticals has changed the way clinicians and researchers approach cardiovascular prevention, demonstrating natural solutions to high blood pressure and heart disease that are now recognized internationally.
With over 250 peer-reviewed publications, an H-index of 70, and more than 15,000 citations, Dr. Pierce’s scientific influence is indisputable. But what truly sets him apart is his unwavering commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and building a legacy that extends far beyond the laboratory bench.
Building Institutions and Inspiring Generations
At the heart of Dr. Pierce’s legacy is the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre itself. As one of the founding architects of the Centre in 1987, he played a central role in its transformation from a modest grouping of six research teams into one of Canada’s most prestigious biomedical research institutions. Under his leadership as Executive Director of Research (2005–2020), the facility expanded significantly, bringing together a large and diverse group of researchers across three key programs:
- The Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICS), which expanded under his leadership, became a world leader in heart failure, oxidative stress, women’s heart health, and tissue engineering.
- Division of Neurodegenerative and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (DNND), focused on aging, memory, and diseases such as dementia and stroke.
- The Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM), which Dr. Pierce helped establish to study the health impacts of functional foods and nutraceuticals.
Thanks to Dr. Pierce’s strategic direction, St. Boniface Hospital was recognized for twelve consecutive years as the most research-intensive small hospital in Western Canada. His efforts in recruitment, funding, and program development attracted top-tier global talent and positioned Winnipeg as a centre for medical research excellence.
A National and International Leader
His leadership role in Canadian research agencies is noteworthy, having served on the boards of Friends of CIHR and the Diabetes Research and Treatment Centre for many years.
Dr. Pierce’s influence extends well beyond provincial borders. He currently serves as World President of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences, a role that underscores his global leadership in heart research. His collaborations with institutions such as the Mayo Clinic and the University of Rome have fostered innovation and brought global attention to Manitoba-based science.
His many accolades—including the Order of Canada (2023), the Order of Manitoba (2018), Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada, and multiple awards for academic excellence—reflect the national and international recognition he has earned for his contributions.
Mentorship and Education: A Lifelong Passion
Perhaps one of Dr. Pierce’s most enduring legacies is his passion for education. He has mentored countless students, research technicians, and visiting scientists over the years, many of whom now hold leadership roles in academia and health care. The programs he championed, such as the RBC Youth BIOlab Jeunesse, have introduced generations of students to the world of biomedical research, inspiring the next generation of scientists and clinicians.
The Dr. Grant Pierce Diabetes Research Prize is a natural endorsement of this commitment. By supporting and celebrating emerging researchers, the Prize ensures that his spirit of mentorship and excellence will continue to shape future discoveries in diabetes and metabolic health.
A Tribute to Leadership, Discovery, and Dedication
In creating this award, the DRTC and the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation not only recognize Dr. Pierce’s scientific achievements but also honour the collaborative, visionary leadership that has defined his career. His legacy lives on in the institutions he built, the students he mentored, and the countless lives improved by his research.
The prize will serve to recognize the achievements of future generations of health researchers in the tradition of Dr. Grant Pierce.
Richly deserved!
