St. Boniface Hospital Research is thrilled to celebrate the exceptional performance of our student researchers at the University of Manitoba’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) final. Our representatives brought home four of the five awards presented at the event, demonstrating the incredible talent and communication skills fostered within our labs.

First Place and Challenger’s Choice: Sumha Ali

Sumha Ali, a researcher from Dr. Jassal’s lab, earned the top spot at this year’s event. Her ability to translate intricate data into a compelling narrative impressed the judges and the audience alike.

For her first-place finish, Sumha was awarded the Dr. Archie McNicol Prize, which includes a $2000 award. She was also a co-winner of the Challenger’s Choice Award, receiving a $200 University of Manitoba Bookstore gift card.

Third Place and People’s Choice: Leena Regi Saleth

The success continued with Leena Regi Saleth from Dr. Dhingra’s lab, who secured third place and the Blenham + Associates Prize in the competition. Leena’s presentation resonated deeply with those in attendance, earning her the People’s Choice Award.

In an impressive show of support, Leena also tied with Sumha for the Challenger’s Choice Award, with both researchers receiving an equal number of votes. Reaching the final stage and collecting multiple awards is a significant feat that brings great honour to her lab and our research community.

About the 3MT Competition

The 3MT competition requires students to condense years of complex research into a three-minute talk for a non-specialist audience. By winning first place, third place, and all three audience-voted categories, Sumha and Leena have set a high standard for public engagement at St. Boniface Hospital Research.

We congratulate both researchers on their remarkable success and for bringing such distinction to their respective labs.
