On August 1st, World Lung Cancer Day served as a key reminder of the need to improve lung health, reduce risk factors, and enhance patient outcomes.
Lung cancer remains one of the most diagnosed cancers in Canada. While traditional risk factors like smoking are well known, ongoing public health initiatives also highlight environmental hazards, including radon gas, pollution, and vaping.
At St. Boniface Hospital Research, dedicated investigators are helping drive innovation in early detection. Dr. Bram Ramjiawan, Director of Research Innovation and Regulatory Affairs, and Dr. Paramjit Tappia, Principal Investigator and Clinical Scientist, have been instrumental in advancing clinical research focused on novel biomarkers and metabolomic plasma panels for early-stage lung cancer detection. Their work aims to turn complex laboratory discoveries into accessible diagnostic tools, giving patients a vital head start in treatment.
Early detection, accessible screening, and sustained research investment remain critical to saving lives and improving outcomes.
