ICS Awards Program

Since 1999, the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at St-Boniface Hospital Research has held an annual Awards Day to celebrate excellence in cardiovascular research. Twelve awards have been established to recognize the contributions of individuals at various career stages, from summer and graduate students to world-leading experts in cardiovascular medicine.

Cardiovascular Leadership/Research Awards

To recognize leadership and achievements in promoting cardiovascular research and education as well as lifetime research achievements, the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences has the following awards:

Robert Beamish Leadership Award:
This award recognizes individuals with an excellent track record of playing a leadership role in promoting cardiovascular sciences and education.

Ken Bowman Research Award:
This award recognizes individuals with an outstanding track record of achievements in cardiovascular research.

Recipients of these awards will make an oral presentation (about 45 minutes). The award comprises accommodation and full hospitality for two nights, as well as a cash prize and commemorative plaque.

Distinguished Lecture Awards

To recognize the contributions in the field of cardiovascular medicine as well as cutting-edge science, the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences has the following named distinguished lectures:

John Foerster Distinguished Lecture Award:
This recognition is awarded based on lifetime contributions in the field of cardiovascular medicine, and is typically given to a senior investigator in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

Vincenzo Panagia Distinguished Lecture Award:
This award is given to an investigator whose work is internationally recognized as being at the cutting-edge in any field of cardiovascular sciences.

Recipients of these awards will make an oral presentation (about 45 minutes). The award comprises accommodation and full hospitality for two nights, as well as a cash prize and commemorative plaque.

Trainee Awards

To recognize excellence in cardiovascular research by post-doctoral and pre-doctoral trainees in any field of Cardiovascular Sciences, the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences has the following awards:

Arnold Naimark Young Investigator Award (For Post-doctoral Fellows):
This award recognizes excellent research completed during the first five years of post-doctoral training. The selection of the recipient is based on the publication record and quality of research, as well as supporting reference letters.

Henry Friesen Young Scientist Award (For Graduate Students):
This award is given for research accomplished during a student’s graduate training, and is based on the track record of the candidate and a supporting nomination letter.

Sr. Jacqueline St-Yves Award for Best Paper:
This award is given to the first author of the best paper published in cardiovascular research in a high impact journal during the preceding year. The research presented in the paper must have been carried out in Manitoba. The quality of the science and relative impact of a given paper are given special consideration.

Heart & Stroke Foundation Award for Masters Student:
This award has been established by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba to encourage the training of young investigators in cardiovascular sciences in Manitoba and to recognize the achievements of a student at the Masters level.

Dr. T. Edward Cuddy Research Award:
The award is based primarily on the excellence in research, track record of the candidate and a nomination letter.

Dr. James S. McGoey Research Award:
These two awards are for summer students and are based on the quality of cardiovascular research accomplished in a laboratory in Manitoba. Awardees are nominated by their supervisors.

Service Awards

Jack Litvack Exemplary Service Award:
The candidate or agency must have provided, over several years, an exemplary service in their line of work to the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences.

Kalwant Dhalla Research Technician Award
This award recognizes the high quality of dedicated services over time by a technician in any program within St-Boniface Hospital Research. The individual must have been in this technical role for not less than 5 years.
